A very rare cognac in provenance of the Oleron Island, produced and aged by a retired wine grower located in the village of St Pierre d’Oléron. These old islander cognacs are extremely rare, about 30 times rarer than any other old Grande Champagne (statistically, if we refer to the total stock available for each cru). This terroir, influenced by the maritime climate of the Atlantic Ocean, benefits from the influence of the Gulf Stream and almost Mediterranean-like sun. Here you can find plants that are not often found on the coastline, such as mimosa and tamarisk, thus giving to the island the nickname of the «Island of Mimosa». Yet the production of cognac has been historically discredited here and, in 40 years, the grape-growing surface has been reduced to half its former area. From 1936 to 1984, the island’s distillers were the only ones authorised to use column stills (distilled only once). This land is nothing less than exceptional for enthousiasts able to appreciate these maritime cognacs originating from sandy soils. it’s during the first lockdown in France that I had the opportunity to buy this «COVID-19  batch», which I had identified a long time ago.

Old gold hue, amber highlights. On the nose, one is struck by the salinity and the expression of this soil and this climate, with the flavours of the French wild coast, warm sand dunes on a summer’s day, and soft spices. In mouth, tender, soft, with a velvety structure due to a long ageing in a humid cellar located on the island, a few hundred yards away from the Ocean. Iodine finish and silky tannins.

This cognac gives a real pleasure: generous, heartwarming, and extremely rare !
